Sun to launch P2P Jxta
Sun Microsystem will reportedly launch Jxta, short for juxtapose, this week. The open-source peer-to-peer software includes, according to ZDNet News, communication protocols, dynamic group directories, management and security. The distributed search technology of InfraSearch, acquired last month by Sun, is also incorporated into the Jxta project - an object-oriented language compatible with Java.
Bill Joy, Sun's chief scientist, has contrasted Jxta with Microsoft's .Net initiative, claiming it would be more open and secure as well as reflective of the diverse open-source community. David Stutz, technical program manager of Microsoft's technical strategy group, said, "Why should I expect that Bill Joy's latest science fair experiment will be any more relevant than Jini, his last?"
