Sun Hardware Roadmaps
Everybody likes to talk about Intel and AMD chips because most of us have either one or the other in our desktop machines. However, for network backbones, the two press darlings are definitely not the only game in town. UNIX frequently reigns behind the scenes, unglamorously holding down the fort while the desktop processors get all the glory. Sun servers are among these stolid workhorses and The Register has the company's roadmap for the upcoming update to its line of workgroup servers. The four-way SunFire 440R and eight-way 880R will be first to appear. Both boast UltraSPARC III processors starting at 750Mhz, hot swappable PCI, and dynamic reconfiguration.
