As you well know, not all workstations are x86-based, and 3Dlabs is hedging its bets by partnering with Sun as well as building graphics for standard-issue Intel-based machines. The company just let us know that its Sun Expert3D-Lite professional graphics card will now be available as a standard configuration in Sun Ultra 60, Ultra 80, Sun Blade 100, and Sun Blade 1000 workstations. While the card was previously available as an add-in, it will now be offered pre-installed in workstations. The Sun Expert3D-Lite graphics card (with Wildcat II technology) was developed by 3Dlabs with Sun engineers providing optimized interfaces and drivers to assure that it is friendly with the Sun Solaris OS. Workstations with the new cards are available now and you can check them out at Sun's site . Sure, we generally only talk about PC hardware here at Tom's Hard News, but Sun is now selling some Solaris-based workstations for under $1,000 - interesting.
