Though music CD sales have increased 20 percent in the last two years in music outlets more than five miles from college campuses, sales at stores within that area have declined 4 percent. A study by VNU Entertainment Marketing blames the reduced sales, several million CD's worth, on Napster and similar services, pointing out that the decline in music store sales came about just as trading MP3 music files "erupted" on campuses. Napster's interim CEO refutes the study and blames the drop in sales at college area music stores on the rise of online sellers and large-chain retailers.
