StrongARM Processor to Power HP Jornada PDA

by - source: Tom's Hardware

While the latest PC processors get all the glory, we tend to overlook their little siblings that are roaming around in PDAs. In fact, while you wouldn't dream of buying a PC without knowing what kind of processor it has, many folks buy PDAs based on the marketing hype rather than their processing power. Intel and Hewlett-Packard Company just let us know that the Intel StrongARM processor will power the new HP Jornada 560 PDA series, which will also use Intel StrataFlash memory. The HP Jornada 560 PDA series makes use of the Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 OS. Intel and HP also announced plans to work together to bring voice communication and wireless apps to upcoming HP handheld products. To merge phone and data processing features, HP will support the Intel Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA) initiative. Intel PCA is a development blueprint for building wireless handheld communications devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities. The Intel SA-1110 processor typically dissipates less than one-half watt, extending battery life for handheld devices. Intel StrataFlash memory is a single-chip solution for code execution and data storage and uses a multilevel cell technology that, according to Intel, makes a good choice for Internet phones and PDAs due to its low cost per bit. The new HP Jornada PDAs have a built-in CompactFlash Type 1 extended slot that allows you to add memory cards and optional accessories like wireless network solutions or the HP Pocket Camera. HP's new PDAs have a removable/rechargeable 14-hour, lithium-polymer battery and HP Safe Store, which offers an additional 8 MB of FlashROM for backing up data and applications. The new PDAs also feature a 16-bit front-lit TFT reflective color screen. The HP Jornada 565 and 568 PDAs should be available in early October in North America. The Jornada 565 features 32 MB RAM and has an estimated retail price of $599. The Jornada 568 has 64 MB RAM and an estimated retail price of $649.
