'Stinger' offers DSL over POTS lines
Lucent Technologies Inc. says it has a new product that adds pizzazz to plain old telephone service, or POTS, lines.
Lucent says its Stinger device will allow Internet service providers and local phone companies to offer DSL service over standard copper phone lines without compromising the quality of user's voice communications.
Lucent's DSL device can send information using conventional phone lines at speeds of about 30 times faster than traditional phone service. The extra capacity also can be used to split the line to provide up to 16 different connections.
