Sprint Nextel introduces wireless ticket purchases for Las Vegas Monorail

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Las Vegas (NV) - Sprint Nextel mobile phone customers will soon be able to purchase their Las Vegas Monorail tickets through their phones. After sending a text message with the word "RIDE" to number 99630, users will receive a ticket image that can be held up to a Swiftpass ticket kiosk. The kiosk will then charge the user and dispense the ticket.

Sprint gave a free trial of the service in January during the Consumer Electronics Show ; the company says that 20% of monorail tickets issued during CES were from wireless phones. This week’s demonstration during CTIA Wireless could be the clincher for service providers to provoke city leaders across the continent to consider similar services for municipal transportation.

When the service goes live, mobile tickets will be $5 per ride, and users will need to pay for the text messaging fees. Incidentally, the monorail station was originally sponsored by Nextel prior to its acquisition by Sprint last year.
