In the tech sector, things seem to happen sooner than the experts have predicted. When it comes to in-car computing, however, the business is lagging seriously behind expectations. Analysts say the holdup in bringing the benefits of real computer power to drivers is caused by inadequate speech recognition technology. Voice interface provides the only foreseeable way to solve driver distraction issues that could lead to both consumer and regulatory resistance to auto PCs. Voice recognition problems, however, are blamed for Cadillac's delay of its Infotainment system from fall 2000 to late 2001, as well as Visteon Corp.'s slow placement of its ICES (information, communication, safety and security) system into production vehicle.
