Spectra Logic's Capacity on Demand Tape Libraries
Most of us are constantly upgrading our storage capacity, whether we're IT folks keeping servers from running out of room or average Joes trying to make room for more MP3s. Spectra Logic has an interesting solution for increasing the capacity of tape drive libraries called the "Capacity on Demand" service. It's intended to let you activate additional capacity in your tape library as your storage needs increase. The way it works is that you initially buy a tape library fully populated with tape slots, but only pay for what your current backup needs require. When you need to increase capacity, you make a call or log on to Spectra Logic's Web site, pay for the upgrade key and Spectra Logic "ships" the key by e-mail. Spectra Logic customers can purchase 15 slot packages that deliver one and a half TeraBytes of storage at a time. Capacity on Demand will be shipping with the Spectra 12000 and 64000 tape libraries in December and the remaining tape library product line in January 2002.
