Sony updates PSP firmware to ward off hackers
Foster City (CA) - Hackers found a loophole in May’s PSP version 3.5 firmware, and now Sony has quietly but frantically released a new update.
The PSP has been a breeding ground for hackers and homebrew applications, a practice Sony openly despises. Developers usually need to work with a low-grade version of the system’s firmware, though, to bypass restrictions set in later updates.
Through an exploit in the latest firmware update, users are able to fairly easily downgrade their system’s firmware, according to PSPUpdates.com.
Version 3.51 of the handheld’s firmware, currently available in Japan and en route to the US, reportedly fixes this problem. Given the protective nature of the update, it will likely be a required update for PSP users who try to connect to the Internet.
