Sony reveals "astounding" graphics engine

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s latest graphics rendering engine is as big as the manufacturing process allows a chip to be, nearly filling a reticle at 462 square millimeters. With 256-Mbit of on-chip embedded DRAM, eight times more than the Graphics Synthesizer used in the PlayStation 2, and 2,000-bit internal buses, it delivers 48 gigabytes per second bandwidth. The chip will reportedly process 75 million polygons per second, has a pixel fill rate between 1.2 and 2.6 gigapixels per second and can draw 75 million polygons a second.

Simplex Solution Inc. worked with various Sony divisions designing the chip. Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. is planning to introduce a core version of the processor for high-end routers and switches.
