Sony prints full-page apology for Resistance in Manchester paper

Manchester (England) - Sony has paid for a full-page ad in the Manchester Evening News, apologizing for using the city’s cathedral in the violent shooter Resistance : Fall of Man.

In the Playstation 3 game, players are able to ransack the Manchester Cathedral and use it as a virtual shooting ground. This outraged Cathedral dean Reverend Roger Govender, as well as numerous church-goers. Sony had previously apologized, though still saying it didn’t think it did anything wrong. With uproar still raging, Sony decided to go one step further and buy a space in the city’s local newspaper.

The ad features a statement from Sony Europe president David Reeves. "It is clear to us that the connection between the congregation and the cathedral is a deeply personal and spiritual one," writes Reeves. "As a result, it is also clear that we have offended some of the congregation by using the cathedral in our science fiction game.

"It was never our intention to offend anyone in the making of this game, and we would like to apologise unreservedly to them for causing that offence, and to all parts of the community who we might also have offended."

Sony has assured that it will not use the likeness of Manchester Cathedral in any future games.
