Sony Invests in Palm Software Division
Sony Corporation has recently invested $20 million in Palm Inc.'s software division, according to an announcement by Palm this week. Palm, Inc., the leader in handheld computers and personal data assistants (PDAs) apparently will use the Sony investment to spin off its division that develops Palm's Operating System, PalmSource. The Palm OS powers not only handhelds manufactured by Palm, but also handhelds for Samsung Electronics Company Ltd., Handspring Inc., and Sony. After its investment, Sony now owns approximately 6% of PalmSource.
