Sony buys Transmeta, AMD notebook chips
Sony Corp., which in the past has used only Intel chips in its PC platforms, is, according to insiders, tapping Transmeta Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices chips to power two new versions of its Vaio notebook. Some observers are pointing to this change as evidence that Intel's influence and power are lessening. AMD's inroads into Intel's mobile turf are scheduled to continue later this year when the challenging company releases two chips based on Athlon and Duron processors.
