Sony accelerates PS2-based graphics system
Sony Computer Entertainment is speeding development of its high-end graphics computer based on Playstation 2 technology. A company announcement says a parallel-processing "GScube" system using 64 processor boards will act as a graphics visualization machine with 4.16 gigapolygons per second 3-D processing capability and 60 frames/second (progressive scan) resolution at 1,080 x 1,980 pixels. If accomplished, this will put the company well ahead of its announced roadmap.
Sony and Square, a film production company, demonstrated a prototype GScube in Tokyo by synthesizing footage in real-time from Square's forthcoming movie version of Final Fantasy. Rendering for textures, however, was reduced for the demo.
