SnapGear debuts VPN firewall-on-a-NIC
Internet security solution provider SnapGear today announced its PCI630 Stateful Firewall NIC . Described as the "first fully isolated stateful firewall PCI device", the product uses a hardened embedded Linux operating system and "non-x86" CPU, to form a complete self-contained VPN and stateful firewall in a PCI card form-factor.
The target application for the card is providing servers and desktops with advanced security that operates independently of the host operating system. Computers with compromised security can always be reached via a secure PPTP , IPsec , or L2TP VPN link. The remote machine can then be completely or partially isolated from the network by adjusting the card's NAT-based firewall.
The PCI630 can also be used in telecommuter and other remote-access applications to provide secure access to corporate gateways via a VPN tunnel.
The product has a recommended retail price of $299 and will be available starting early April 2003 .
