SMIC to begin volume production of solar cells in April

Richard Chang, president and CEO of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), has revealed that the China-based foundry will begin volume production of solar cells made from recycled wafers next month.

SMIC’s solar cell products have received validation from clients in Europe, and the company is also awaiting product validation from other clients in Japan, Chang said, adding SMIC’s production of solar cells is expected to reach 10 megawatts-peak (MWp) in 2006.
