SMC to ship Nitro XM upgrades this quarter
SMC Networks today became the first networking product company to announce support for GlobespanVirata’s PRISM Nitro XM Xtreme Multimedia performance-enhancing technology.
SMC said that "all of its 802.11g networking products for home and business" will incorporate Nitro XM via free firmware and driver upgrades that will begin rolling out by the end of March.
SMC’s announcement quoted the same 140Mbps throughput number touted by GlobespanVirata in its announcement of the enhancement [related story] right before this month’s CES.
But - as with all "enhanced" 11g technologies - actual throughput will be significantly lower and depends on many factors. (See our Enhanced 802.11g NeedToKnow for more details.)
