Small supercomputer maker buys Cray
A small, Seattle-based supercomputer maker has bought former industry giant Cray Research.
Tera Computer, which purchased the business from Silicon Graphics, says it plans to change its own name to Cray Inc. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cray was acquired by SGI in 1996.
Along with the Cray name, Tera also picks up three supercomputer lines and an installed base of 600 supercomputers, which it hopes to use to challenge industry leaders such as IBM.
