Chicago (IL) – Skype has been offline since Thursday morning EST. The company is providing updates on its progress to restore service, which apparently is still offline for many Skype users in the early morning hours of Friday.

In a message to Skype users, the company wrote that it is still working on "fixing issues in [its] networking software" as many users have seen the VoIP service being offline for about 18 hours at the time of this writing. However, Skype said that it was "monitoring the clients getting online with increased success" at 12 am EST on Friday.

"It’s been a loooong day (and night) for many and we are gradually moving to new shifts of fresh brains to help out those getting to well deserved few hours of sleep," wrote Sten Tamkivi, general manager of Skype in Estonia.

Skype originally acknowledged its first major outage on its company blog at 9:02 am EST on Thursday. At that time, Skype said that the service has been unreachable for "some" users and confirmed that the cause of the problem is "a software issue." The company stated that it would take about 12 to 24 hours to fix the problem.

Downloads of the Skype client were disabled early on Thursday, but were made available again later in the day.

The company declined to provide further details and did not comment on the reasons of the outage.
