Siemens tests kid tracking devices
It appears that Siemens AG will be the first to market a device capable of communicating with and tracking a child, regardless of location. Other companies, including WhereNet Corp., Applied Digital Solutions Inc., and eWorldtrack Inc. are working on similar products, some that will allow users to find the exact location of the tiny devices' wearers, using GPS positioning technology, via the Web. Others will provide medical information and will notify emergency services if the data warrants it.
Siemens' Leonie, testing now, weighs seven ounces and operates as a simple two-button phone that can be hidden in a child's clothing or belongings. The child can call the authorities for help with a single button or be patched through to speak with a parent. Parents can access information about the child's location within a few meters.
