Shock, Horror, Amazement: Nvidia Buys AMD (April Fool) : Introduction
Introduction
In a move that is bound to make Webmasters of sites that have AMD in the URL feeling frustrated and left out in the cold, Nvidia bought AMD today, April 1, 2002. In a move that had everyone fooled, Nvidia, using excess nForce inventory in the channel to do a stock swap with AMD, has created a new company out of the takeover - AmVidia.
The new company will focus on competing directly as a Tier One OEM thereby removing the biggest pain for would-be Intel competitors and Microsoft haters everywhere. An AmVidia spokesperson told us, "We're going to be using a cheap version of the BeOS, and completely doing away with Microsoft and Intel. Corel is going to supply an Office Suite for us, and we're going to make everything Open Source and Linux. We won't have to do a thing on the software side. There's millions of pieces of really, really useful shareware out there."
Of course, revenge has something to do with this strategy, too. Nvidia has often had to struggle to meet the outrageous demands of OEMs such as Dell and Compaq. Such demands include associating with lowly product managers at said OEMs who exercise enormous power, and can humble powerful billion dollar chip company CEO's merely by switching supply lines. This is not good, and irritates graphics companies a lot.
AMD's problems with Tier One OEMs is well documented. The Tier One OEMs are often forced to meet AMD reps in dark bars late at night to avoid running into anyone from Intel. Most Tier One OEMs fear losing access to Intel's generous market development funds, and are often afraid of having their names smeared across unpopular and loony tunes sites such as Truckshardware.com, run by notorious alien anthropologist and prophet of doom, Truck Jones.
As a Dell spokesman told us, "You know, once you get called names on Truckshardware.com, your family sees it, your mother sees it, and everyone just gets upset, and there's tears, lawsuits, and a lot of general unhappiness. I have to spend a lot of time explaining to my Aunt Mae that there are no aliens, monsters under the bed, or satanic cults in our company. I really hate that Truck Jones. Ooh. Don't print that. He scares me. I think he is developing some sort of death ray. Ooh. Don't say that, too. Okay, interviews over."
We could not reach Truck Jones for comment. He is at present undergoing shock therapy at the Elmer Fudd Clinic For The Habitually Paranoid.
