Sharp licenses alternative OS for mobile devices

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Sharp has licensed the Epoc real-time operating system for use in upcoming mobile information products.

Sharp is a licensee of Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, but recognizes Symbian's Epoc OS as a hot prospect for third-generation cellular phones and other mobile terminals.

Sharp said it intends to start marketing Epoc-based mobile information products in Europe early next year, but has made no decision on sales to other regions, including Japan.

Symbian is jointly owned by Ericsson, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia, and Psion.
