Summary: Setting Up A VPN Connection Quickly And Easily

Ad

Setting up a VPN connection for private use is no problem under Windows Vista. The setup procedure is quick and easy, and gives users the opportunity to securely exchange data over an unsecured network with a remote computer.

The only minor problem is the limitation to a maximum of one VPN connection at any one time: if several users wish to access a computer using Windows VPN, then they must take turns. To get around this restriction, you will need to use an alternative solution such as OpenVPN. Unlike the VPN solution offered by Windows, OpenVPN is much more complicated to configure and set up, and the effort required will probably outweigh the benefits for many users. If the purpose is purely the exchange of data with other users, a solution like TeamDrive may be used instead.

Installing an FTP server on a home computer also guarantees quick and uncomplicated access to shared data, but the security issue is of relevance here, as the FTP protocol is almost always not encrypted. Another advantage of the VPN connection is that you are able to use your client computer to access your network, which also gives you access to other computers and services. Configuring the router for additional services, such as remote desktop connections or a connection to VNC, is not necessary, as you are already inside your network.

Indeedy VPN's are a wonderfull thing, but with ISP's like Tiscali and PIPEX using trafic shaping to block anything they dont like in prime time vpn access isn't always a sure thing. I know for cirtain Tiscali Blocks alot of it's VPN protocol trafic due to the fact that people like me and other gamers use vpn's to dodge the effects of trafic shaping. I had to resort to this measure with pipex as they blocked access to eve online.

This mostly applies to residents of the uk, i have no idea what other isp's cause these problems outside the uk.

One problem, not with the configuration, but will the administrator, myself as amdin i would not allow users to freely create VPN connections into my company network, without authorisation and further security.
