Second Hand Smoke: Mad money GPUs
Feel the excitement for graphics chips, the heat for speed ? No doubt, there are few segments in the IT industry, in which a battle of cut-throat competition is carried out so openly and visibly to the customer as in the 3D graphics chip industry. Every fraction of a market share percentage point is a sign of a multi-level fight between two companies that are ready for the kill anytime.
Omid reflects on this scenario - and what it means to the consumer - in his latest post in his Second Hand Smoke blog. From the post :
"(...) I read this article not too long after being lambasted by an Nvidia marketing person about how unfair we were being to the company. It was a surprisingly angry, bitter, aggressive, confrontational rant from someone who is, for the most part, a genial, friendly sort. It smelled of desperation and pressure."
"(...) Unfortunately, the graphics business has been nothing more than a game of leapfrog for the last twenty years, and even doubly so since 3D took over the mainstream about ten years ago. If for no other reason than the fact that most of the gains made by one company over its competitors can be put down to subjective quality issues."
