Seagate planning to release a hybrid hard drive

by - source: Tom's Hardware UK

Hard drive capacities lately have been growing faster than ever and we sometimes have a hard time keeping up with the announcements. Interestingly it wasn’t market leader Seagate that dominated the headlines, but rather its competitions, including Western Digital, Fujitsu, Hitachi and Samsung.

However, it looks like Seagate may come out of hiding soon, as a press release issued today is talking about the Momentus 5400 PSD, the company’s first hybrid hard drive. The 2.5" model will combine, like competing models, traditional hard drive storage technologies with a supporting NAND flash memory unit. Seagate promises the PSD will deliver "faster boot-up and performance when running Windows Vista in laptop PCs."

Details on specifications, availability and pricing have not been provided. But we are guessing that we will know more about this new hard drive within a couple weeks.
