For PC/TV convergence to occur, you can expect that the there will have to be a convergence in the types of displays we use to interface with the wondrous new capabilities we have yet to see. Since television is supposed to make the move to digital in the next few years, the best bet is that well be looking at displays based on computer monitors since they are much better in terms of viewing quality and resolution (plus they're edigital by nature). Samsung looks to be moving toward that pretty obvious assumption with the mass production of its new 15" TFT-LCD XGA-Resolution (1024 x 768) LTM150XH display panel with streaming video capability. The new display is the component-level version of its recently released 15" Smart LCD (LTM150XI) display. The LTM150XH features a response time of 25 ms, contrast ratio of 300:1, enhanced brightness of 330 nits, wide viewing angle of 120 degrees horizontal: 100 degrees vertical, an XGA resolution of 1024 x 768, and 16.7 million colors. The basic panel is also compatible with LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) controllers. Samsung says the LTM150XH uses Reduced Swing Differential Signal (RSDS) Technology to reduce EMI emissions by cutting signal voltage, internal to the LCD, from 3.3 volts TTL to 0.2 volts differential (peak to peak). RSDS Technology was developed by Samsung and National Semiconductor and was introduced in 1998. Volume shipments of the new displays are currently available and sample pricing is $350.
