Samsung joins Nokia in mobile TV initiative

by

Columbus (OH) - Samsung and Nokia have joined forces to work on a universal mobile TV platform that could help to bring interoperability to a medium that's currently rife with proprietary boundaries.

In addition to working on mobile operating system standards for mobile video, Samsung and Nokia will work with service providers to work on a more standard delivery method of videos from TV networks.

Verizon has the most robust mobile TV service in the US, offering live programming of over a dozen channels in 22 markets. Sprint, Cingular, and T-Mobile all have video on demand services, but each is presented in a different infrastructure.

Nokia and Samsung are also working on new technologies to decrease the power consumption required for cell phones to play video content.
