SAMSON-2 supercluster and its 128 Athlon MPs
San Diego firm Rackserver has built a supercluster for the Bartol Research Institute, located at the University of Delaware, known as SAMSON-2, using the new WulfKit3 three-dimensional interconnect, an high-performance interconnect developed by Dolphin Interconnect Solutions.
The system has already achieved 215 Gigaflops on the standard Linpack benchmark and is made up of 64 dual-processor 1U rack-mounted nodes. That's 128 AMD Athlon MP processors 1800+, running at 1.533GHz. SAMSON-2 will provide state-of-the-art supercomputing for the computational physics research at the University. SAMSON-1 was installed in Fall 2000 and, at the time, was the largest custom supercomputer to use the AMD Athlon processor.
