S3 Plans Return To Desktop With "DeltaChrome"
Via's S3 Graphics division signaled a return to the PC desktop graphics market Tuesday by disclosing DeltaChrome, the company's first DirectX 9.0-compatible graphics core which will form the basis for both mobile and desktop products later this year.
The S3 DeltaChrome builds on many of the elements included in the AlphaChrome mobile graphics accelerator, including its emphasis on low power for the mobile markets. But the chip also includes some interesting desktop capabilities, such as an integrated high-definition digital TV encoder.
"The initial emphasis is in mobile," said Young Kwon, a senior product marketing manager for S3. "That's where we can win, where we can claim we're the best in the world."
