S3, Transmeta to develop Linux Net devices
S3 has announced plans to work with Transmeta to produce Linux-based Internet devices based on the new chipmaker's Crusoe processor.
The as-yet-unnamed Crusoe Internet appliance will come in a 2-pound package that includes a 10.4" screen, hard drive and PC Card slots for additional devices, such as wireless modem cards.
Unveiled earlier this week, the Crusoe chip employs "code-morphing" software that can translate x86 processor instructions to run Linux, Windows and Windows applications.
Several more device makers are expected to announce support for the chip in coming weeks.
