  • 65 nm transition to save Intel $2 billion

    Intel is rapidly moving to convert its current 90 nm production process for processors to 65 nm. By the end of 2006, the company will have three 65 nm fabs up and running - including two new facilities costing more than $3 billion each. They will crank out faster chips, but the transition ultimately boils down to cost savings - substantial cost savings, according to Intel CFO Andy Bryant.

    In a briefing with journalists, AMD provided and updated outlook on its future processor and manufacturing plans. The firms 65 nm processors will be introduced in December. The company trails Intel by about 12 months, but AMD believes it will make the jump to a product line that consists mainly of 65 nm CPUs within half a year.

    Senators have resumed discussing the issue of the digital TV transition date in advance of key votes next week on amendments to the National Intelligence Reform Act of 2004, which would mandate that US broadcasters release their VHF spectrum back to the Federal Communications Commission no later than 31 December 2008.
  • The AOL transition begins as e-mail, other premium services become free

    Today, AOL's new CEO, Jonathan Miller, joined his corporate parent's boss, Time Warner president Jeff Bewkes, in declaring that e-mail and other services for which AOL was among the last to charge a premium, would now be marketed for free. "You've Got Mail...For Free!" is the phrase we'll be hearing, but will it be enough to bring back AOL's long-lost membership base?
