    The IEEE is forming a group to revise the IEEE 1625 standard for lithium-ion laptop batteries and guess which two companies will chair it... wait for it... Sony and Dell. Of course, these two companies have extensive experience in exploding batteries which makes them eminently qualified to chair the group.

    Amidst a flurry of notebook battery recalls, several notebook makers including Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo have met in San Jose to discuss possible new battery standards. Sony, the battery manufacturer at the center of recent battery recalls, was not invited to the meeting, according to Sony spokesman John Dolak. It's unclear if Apple attended the meeting.

    The European Commission meets on Monday to determine the amount of fines it's prepared to levy against Microsoft (a very short meeting, most believe), and again on Wednesday, most likely to impose these fines. It would seem the EC is in a rush to proclaim Microsoft guilty of not turning over material that an agreement with its independent trustee says is actually due the following week.
