  • Second Life tests out voice chat

    The virtual denizens of Second Life will be getting a new way to communicate, namely voice chat. Starting next week, 1000 lucky people will be able to beta test voice chat technology. Linden Labs, the owners of Second Life, say this isn't just any voice chat because character animations will match speech volumes - talk louder and your character goes nuts. Characters can chat privately in addition to joining larger "chats" for concerts and public gatherings.
  • Second Life gets its own reality TV show

    Big Brother, the hit television show where contestants are stuck in a house, is coming to Second Life's virtual world. Fifteen players will stay in a glass house with one being voted off each week. The surviving player will get a virtual island with the game.
  • Virtual Second Life world hit by real hackers

    The virtual world of Second Life has been hit with some very real criminals. Linden Lab, the owners of Second Life, has warned players that hackers have illegally accessed a database containing player names and financial information. As a precaution, the company has invalidated all accounts and is requiring players to make new passwords.
  • BBC to open "Second Life" for kids

    The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) will be opening an online world aimed at children from seven to twelve year olds. Much like the much publicized Second Life online world, the BBC version, called CBBC World, will let kids explore areas and talk to each other. However, the BBC will not introduce chat rooms or any private areas, presumably to protect children.
