    Seagate will announce on Tuesday the industry's first 3.5" hard drive that is based on perpendicular recording technology. Targeting enterprise applications, the new Cheetah 15K.5 doubles the capacity of its predecessor and promises 30% more performance.

    Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) claims that it is first to have started mass production perpendicular recording platters for harddrives. According to the company the 1.8" discs double the capacity of current devices to 40 GByte per platter.

    Toshiba claims it has won the race of bringing the first PMR harddrive to the market. PMR, short for perpendicular magnetic recording, is believed to increase the capacity of harddrives substantially: Toshiba's first PMR device is a single platter 1.8" model with a storage density of 133 Gbit per square inch.

    Seagate allowed a first look at its product line for the next three quarters. The company will introduce ten new drives for consumers, including 500 GByte desktop drives, an 8 GByte CF II-sized drive as well as a 160 GByte notebook drive that will make use of perpendicular recording.

    Toshiba today said that it has shipped more than one million perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) HDDs since June 2005, more than 40 million Ipod-sized 1.8" hard disk drives over the past six years as well as more than four million 2.5" drives for automobiles.
