  • Patent Office rejects Microsoft's FAT patent

    In the reexamination proceeding initiated earlier this year by the Public Patent Foundation, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has rejected all of the claims of Microsoft's patent on the FAT file system, which Microsoft describes as "the ubiquitous format used for interchange of media between computers, and, since the advent of inexpensive, removable flash memory, also between digital devices." Relying predominantly on evidence provided by PUBPAT when the reexamination was requested, the Patent Office made multiple rejections of the Redmond, WA based software giant's patent.

    The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has agreed to re-examine Microsofts controversial FAT patent by request of the Public Patent Foundation (Pubpat). Microsoft is confident that the government afgency will confirm the validity of its patent.

  • Philips revokes CD-R patent license for CMC and Ritek

    Royal Philips Electronics has revoked CD-R disc patent licenses for CMC Magnetics and Ritek, the top two producers of optical discs in Taiwan, as well as Prodisc Technology and Lead Data, two second-tier makers, according to a list of CD-R licensees published on Philips Intellectual Property & Standards' (PIPS') global website.
  • USPTO invalidates some of Forgent Networks' JPEG patent claims

    The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has rejected some of Forgent Network's JPEG patent claims during a patent reexamination process that was initiated by the Public Patent Foundation (PubPat) last year. According to the PubPat, the office invalidated "the broadest claims of the patent" in a non-final ruling.
