Self-assembling Polymer Arrays The Secret Of Next-generation Hard Drives?
- News

Madison (WI) - Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies discovered a newpatterning technology that could lead to a new generation of hard drives that are not only easier to manufacture but also feature a storage density that cannot be achieved with traditional media and processes today. The new production method builds on existing approaches by combining the lithography techniques traditionally used to pattern microelectronics with novel self-assembling materials called block copolymers, the researchers said When added to a lithographically patterned surface, the copolymers’ long molecular chains spontaneously assemble into the designated arrangements. This research addresses one of the most significant challenges to delivering patterned media - the mass production of patterned disks in high volume, at a reasonable cost," says Richard New, director of research at HGST. The large potential gains in density offered by patterned media make it one of the most promising new technologies on the horizon for future hard disk drives."...

Stretching The Limits Of Lithography: MIT Creates 25 Nm Structures
- News
New research results published by the MIT now suggest that there may be even more room left in common lithography. The technology is limited to patterning arrayed features only, which makes the creation of more complex chips with arbitrarily shaped patterns produced with this method impossible. On the upside, patterned chip can be created very quickly without loss of focus - and lots of commodity chips in fact use periodic patterns. The MIT researchers believe that their new technique could "pave the way for next-generation computer memory and integrated-circuit chips, as well as advanced solar cells and other devices."...

Fujitsu paves way to 5 TB hard drives
- News
Fujitsu paves way to 5 TB hard drives. fujitsu patterned media. Fujitsu’s news describes a one of first details and outlooks provided by one of the leading hard drive manufacturers about its patterned media technology research. So far largely limited to paper publications and simulation programs, Fujitsu claims that it was able to build a patterned media device with a one-dimensional array nanohole pattern with a track width of only 25 nm. At least in theory, a density of 1 Tb/inch2, would translate into 3.5" drives with a capacity of about 5 TB, 2.5" notebook drives with 1.5 TB and 1.8" portable drives with about 500 GB. Research programs, however, indicate that patterned media could go far beyond 1 Tb. A team of physicists at the University of Houston announced last year that patterned media could reach a density of up to 20 ......

Tom's Back To School Guide: Gear for Work
- Articles & reviews
Pricing in the portable computing market is volatile—most manufacturers release new models on a quarterly basis, often whether there are changes in hardware components or not. If I could, I would have listed only laptops based on Intel’s new Centrino 2 technology. Check out what the new Managing Editor of Tom’s Hardware, Chris Angelini, has to say about Centrino 2 In addition to Street Pattern, there are two other patterned designs: Chill and Commotion. The new solid state drives promise much better protection against dropping, but they’re still quite expensive and they just might drain more battery power than similarly-sized magnetic disks....

A Look Into The Hard Drive's Future
- Articles & reviews
A key for this improvement will be patterned media technology, which is expected to result in 2.5” notebook drives at 1.5 TB by the beginning of the next decade and roughly 4 TB by 2013. The next step depends on the success and development speed of patterned media: thermally assisted recording would allow creating 10 to 12 TB 2.5” notebook hard drives, and allow squeezing up to 50 TB onto a 3.5” desktop hard drive. Patterned Media Patterned media is very much self-explanatory: it means that the platters will hold a preset structure, which defines the exact location for each bit. Hitachi says that one of its suppliers already offers patterned media platters, but it does not expect patterned media to reach the mainstream before 2010. Patterned media will introduce a structure that allows moving the bits closer to each other in order to increase recording density....

Pentop Computing Is More Than A Kids' Toy
- Articles & reviews
Barry Gerber dissects the technology and functionality of LeapFrog's Pentop Computer and looks at a number of other products based on the Anoto Group's pattern recognition technology. He concludes that there can and should be a place in our lives for this relatively new, compact mobile technology based on an ancient input device.. Sure most of the Fly's apps are for kids, but the Anoto Group's technology represents a new paradigm in computing that focuses on data input with a seemingly traditional device coupled with the ability to build powerful applications using the data. No video games found in search of Virginia Tech killer's dorm
- Articles & reviews
Police and news media are still trying to figure out what caused Virginia Tech student Cho Seung-Hui to kill himself along with 32 classmates and teachers, but so far violent video games don't appear to be a factor. Almost immediately after the shootings, Dr. Phil McGraw and Jack Thompson appeared on major news networks and tried to link Seung-Hui's shootings to violent video game play. Attorney and anti-violent game activist Jack Thompson also went on a media offensive by giving interviews to major networks like Fox News and MSNBC. In his Fox News interview, he said that the FBI found that the "common denominator" in school shootings were the shooter's immersion in incredibly violent video games. Evidence is continuing to pour in and some people are now speculating that he could have patterned his rampage after scenes from a very violent released in 2004 called "Oldboy"....

Boxing Comics: Buffy Season 8?

If they did a Season 8 of the TV show, I seriously doubt it would start like this, and there is no evidence that the comics are patterned after unused scripts from a Season 8 that was in the works. The Terabyte Battle Continues: Enter Seagate
- Articles & reviews
In any case, the battle for the prestigious high-end storage segment will continue, as the drive makers continue to exploit perpendicular magnetic recording and get ready for the subsequent steps, like patterned media and heat assisted recording. Finally, there is the Barracuda 7200.11 by Seagate, which follows the traditional method of providing more capacity and more performance with every new drive generation. Let’s see how the new "dot eleven" compares to its two competitors......

Research shows lasers could see through walls one day
- News
According to the article, researchers created "specially patterned crystals" that measured just a few nanometers in length that behaved like "artificial atoms." This new transparent material created by the combination of light and crystals is made up of molecules that are half matter and half light. At the moment the effect can only be produced in a lab under specific conditions but it has the potential to lead to all sorts of new applications." The new technology holds the potential to send light signals without interference : "Now, if confidential information is being spied on, the disturbance shows up right away and we can nab the eavesdropper with 100% certainty," he said....
