Analysis: Has Intel found the key to unlock supercomputing powers on the desktop?
- News
While this new type of integrated processors will open the door to much more demanding applications that will include physics processing and simulation, they will bring a whole new set of requirements to programmers. Knowledge of multi-threaded programming, expert knowledge to fine-tune threading and knowledge to exploit the hidden capability of hardware appears to require a whole new approach on how to develop applications - in some way a whole new generation of programmers. Intel CPUs with this new ability will directly recognize those new opcodes. It will immediately instruct the accelerator to handle whatever is required. In fact, Wang told us these newaccelerators will operate in the same virtual memory space each task is using in the CPU, thereby sharing resources....

Whitney, Intel's 810 Chipset - Part I
- Articles & reviews
Over are the good old days of 'North' and 'South' bridge, Intel 'invented' the new "Accelerated Hub Architecture"!! Now I cannot really say that I ever really understood the point of 'North' and 'South' bridges on motherboards, since it would be news to me that you adjust your motherboard according to North and South like Muslims praying towards Mecca. The main deal about this new architecture is that the two main chips are not connected using the PCI-bus, but a new dedicated bus that offers double the bandwidth of PCI....

Acoustically Manage Your Hard Drive
- Articles & reviews
This in turn consists of rotational vibration that is caused by the spindle motor, as well as vibration noise from the read/write heads, which accelerate and brake many times per second. The fastest way of relocating heads is by accelerating them in the direction of the new track until half of the distance has been covered and then slow down the head movement until they’ve reached their destination. There are multiple options available for changing this operation, starting with modifying acceleration and braking, as well as the impulse power that is required....

The grocery list of new products at this year's Computex is indeed long: NVIDIA 's G70 card, single card dual 6800 Ultras, a PCIe/AGP combo VGA card and amazing gadgets galore. The MSI booth had so many people walking through it looking at new products that it left us with the impression of being at an open-air electronics market. The company has introduced a new slogan for accelerating motherboard sales, too: all their latest products will be labeled "MSI 64, Now!" This seems to be MSI's new slogan for 2005. This tiny unit is one of several new MegaPlayers from MSI. ...

Accelerating Athlon: VIA Releases KT266A Chipset
- Articles & reviews
Accelerating Athlon: VIA Releases KT266A Chipset. accelerating athlon. If you think that this news isn't really worth disturbing your Labor Day weekend, then you might be wrong. The first DDR-solution for Athlon, AMD's 760 chipset, had not only been available almost six months earlier, it was also outperforming VIA's new product. As if this wasn't bad enough news, SiS had surprised everybody in May 2001 with the release of its SiS735 chipset for the same processor/memory configuration, which was not only cheaper than VIA's KT266, but also faster. VIA officials delivered a sample motherboard with the new KT266A chipset to our lab and we checked if VIA's second try would finally make up for the disappointments of its predecessor. ...
