Hitachi GST to start volume shipments of Mikey microdrives in 4Q

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) is expected to start volume shipments of its new-generation of microdrives, codenamed Mikey, in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Morse Chen, general manager for Hitachi GST Taiwan and Shanghai. -
Hitachi sees 5 TByte harddrives and 60 GByte microdrives

Hitachi believes perpendicular recording will allow harddrive engineers to take sub-1" microdrives to 60 GByte and desktop harddrives beyond a TByte. The company demonstrated the technology with a density of 230 Gbit per square inch which is about 70 percent more than in today's highest density production drives. -

Some Taiwan MP3-player manufacturers are using 1GB NAND-flash storage to replace one" miniature hard disk drives (microdrives) as flash prices fall and microdrive supply is constrained, according to sources at the manufacturers.
