• Hitachi GST to start volume shipments of Mikey microdrives in 4Q

  Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) is expected to start volume shipments of its new-generation of microdrives, codenamed Mikey, in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Morse Chen, general manager for Hitachi GST Taiwan and Shanghai.

  Hitachi believes perpendicular recording will allow harddrive engineers to take sub-1" microdrives to 60 GByte and desktop harddrives beyond a TByte. The company demonstrated the technology with a density of 230 Gbit per square inch which is about 70 percent more than in today's highest density production drives.

  Some Taiwan MP3-player manufacturers are using 1GB NAND-flash storage to replace one" miniature hard disk drives (microdrives) as flash prices fall and microdrive supply is constrained, according to sources at the manufacturers.
