  • P2P indexer arrested, server shut down, but eDonkey brays on - News

The international Motion Picture Association heralded the capture of the proprietor of one of P2P service eDonkey's major indexing servers, as though they had nabbed Saddam Hussein. Brussels (Belgium) - A somewhat dramatic statement released yesterday by the Motion Picture Association, the international body of movie studios for which the MPAA is one affiliate, proclaimed that Swiss officials arrested the proprietor of one of P2P service eDonkey’s major indexing servers, dubbed Razorback 2.0. Without using eDonkey itself, our own tests showed the Razorback 2.0 server to be responding to IP signals, although its indexing service has been reported offline by eDonkey users reporting on Usenet newsgroups. Such users are currently suffering from the inconvenience of having to switch to Razorback 2.3, Razorback 2.4, or any of the 90 other eDonkey indexing servers which can reportedly service 50,000 users or more. Slyck’s columnist today is praising one of the underlying indexing protocols of the eMule system, called Kademila, for demonstrating that its decentralized approach to indexing could indeed pick up the slack when a major server in the network goes dark....

  • Google Desktop Beta v. 3 searches across computers, to the dismay of EFF - News

Thus the search gadget pulls up indexed documents from your system, including e-mails and Microsoft Office documents. During our test, the search gadget could only pull up a partial list of matches from our local system, because the indexing procedure was still running in the background. With a system as extensive as ours, this one-time procedure could reasonably take several hours ; a few hours into our test, Desktop’s indexing process was still only 8% complete. While certain feedback is sent back to Google through the program, monitoring of our firewalls indicates that the index itself remains local. But since it is Google that is producing the index, and that index is being leveraged by Google software that now can be accessed across computers, with the advent of version 3 of the beta, the EFF claims, Google could potentially "have" everything that’s indexed on your system....

  • PDC: Microsoft's Greg Sullivan on XML, information systems, Google - News

GS  : Yes, because we don’t expect to index the Internet. The MSN team has got a lot of people working very hard on building great search technologies, and they have done the same thing in terms of indexing the Internet, and so I don’t think the need for tools and servers and search engines that can aggregate across all of the many, many millions of Web pages out there, and provide relevant hints as to what you’re looking for....

  • Bye Bye Tape, Hello 5.3TB eSATA - Articles & reviews

The second tip in the High-Rely manual is to disable indexing of the eSATA drives. Simple enough, why use indexing on a drive that will just be used for creating a single disk backup? There wouldn't be that many files on the drive to index. Just right-click on the right side of each disk drive object, choose properties and deselect "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching". One of the benefits of disabling indexing on your external disk drives is to avoid unnecessary activity on the drive. ...

  • Second Hand Smoke - Google Fast the Northern Light - Articles & reviews

Conversely, All the Web and Northern Light want to cover as many pages on the Web by indexing content. From the background information I have read on both companies, I believe that Northern Light has indexed 150 million Web pages, and FAST Search and Transfer , the Norwegian company behind All the Web, has indexed over 200 million pages, and wants to go as high as 500 million. Let me preface the question by saying that the general consensus of opinion among search engine experts is that the Web cannot be indexed completely, and never will be so, there has to be a number of different methods for searching and collating results....

  • Countdown to Windows Vista: The THG Rundown - Articles & reviews

Windows indexes file names and file properties, but the advanced options sub-menu allows you to activate indexing for file content as well. The search generates an index file that it uses for searches, which is much quicker than physically looking for files on the hard drive time and time again. By default, Vista only indexes your personal files and the Start Menu, which is usually sufficient. ...

The first solution to this is a multidimensional data index based on flexible criteria. These metadata go way beyond what is currently understood by indexing. For incorporation into the progressive indexing procedure, Windows can only use metadata on those file formats that the system recognizes and can handle....

  • Will desktop searching reveal all your hidden PC secrets? - News

Desktop search is not new : it is already built into the Start menu of Microsoft Windows XP. However, not everyone is aware it exists, it excludes lots of file types, the results are generally poor, and it is very slow - unless users have indexed their hard drives. Since Microsoft’s Indexing Service is obscured three levels deep in the search options, it is a safe bet not many people have....
