Microsoft's Private Folder application may not be so private

Microsoft's Private Folder application may not be so private. microsoft private folder notsoprivate. Yesterday we wrote about Microsoft's free Private Folder 1.0 application that encrypts and password protects a folder on a desktop. Westlake Village (CA) - Yesterday we wrote about Microsoft’s free Private Folder 1.0 application that encrypts and password protects a folder on a desktop. Using the proper uninstallation process through the Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel caused the desktop shortcut to dispapper, but the folder at C :\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Private Folder stayed. The contents of the folder also survived, but remained encrypted....

'Private Folder' Powertoy still available, though Microsoft removed links
- News
Private Folder' Powertoy still available, though Microsoft removed links. microsoft private folder still available. In a baffling display of crossed wires, the Private Folder utility which Microsoft said late last Friday would be discontinued, after admins complained about its inability to be managed by group policy, actually remains available for download, though links to the file have evidently been removed. Redmond (WA) - The news this morning was that Microsoft officially withdrew its support of "Private Folder," one of its "Powertoy" accessories for Windows XP - which was released only last week - reacting to complaints about how its folder encryption capability could be used to thwart the designs of system administrators....

Review: Buffalo Technology TeraStation

All you need to do is define backup folders, password-protect them if desired, define the source and destination folders for each backup and schedule daily or weekly backups. Once logged in, I could see folders for each drive, plus a folder for an "info" folder that did not appear in the TeraStation's Shared Folder list. I did find that only folders within each drive's folder (other than the "info" folder) that had FTP access enabled in their Shared Folder settings were visible. But I also found that I had to set User level privileges for folders in order to make the available for FTP - Group level privs appeared to be ignored....

Thecus N5200: Screaming fast, but plenty rough around the edges

Figure 12: Storage >Folder configuration screen For non-public folders, a click of the ACL button pops up another window (Figure 13) where you can set file access permissions. Figure 13: ACL configuration screen The usbcopy folder is used by the USB copy feature that can be initiated from the 5200's front panel. This feature copies the contents of a USB flash key, drive or digital camera (with a USB port) to a time-stamped folder. Try as I might, I wasn't able to delete the folder or any of the files using the Windows file manager. My adventures with the Target USB feature that employs the usbhdd folder also didn't go smoothly....

Figure 4: The NSLU2's default shares If you poke around the NSL's directory structure using your OS's file explorer, you'll find that Disk 1 really is the "public" folder found in the Admin 1 folder. Actually, all Shares get created as folders / directories under the Admin 1 top-level share. Access to the "Private Folder" that can be created for each user is actually controlled by the creation of a same-named Group. In my test case, I created a sub-folder that had different and more restrictive Group permissions than its parent folder. But once I logged into the parent folder, I was granted complete access to the sub-folder. ...

iPhone Revisited: A Week Later, Has The Polish Come Off?

Client-server Inbox folder synchronization is also part of the IMAP protocol. It is also normal under the IMAP protocol for a copy of a deleted message to be placed in the client’s Trash folder and for client Trash folder contents to be synchronized to the user’s IMAP server-based Trash folder. Some have claimed that setting the time for removal of deleted items from Never on the iPhone to some interval such as the 1 day minimum, causes messages marked for deletion to be purged from client folders and through synchronization from server folders. Some have hypothesized that this parameter might apply to automatically emptying the Trash folder, not to purging messages marked for deletion, though many have reported that this doesn’t work reliably either. Clicking the Edit menu at the top of the Outlook window and selecting "Purge Deleted Messages" removes the messages from the IMAP view of the Inbox, leaving only the copy of the messages in the Deleted Items folder (Outlook’s equivalent of the Trash folder)....

Color-code keywords can now be added to emails which can then be sorted into virtual folders. Tagged emails can then be sorted into virtual folders called Smart Folders. Often emails can belong in many categories and may not neatly sit in a single folder. An email from a sales representative at Seagate could go in Sales or Seagate, but with Smart Folders you could make a virtual folder just for Sales related mail. In addition, Smart Folders are effectively saved searches that last until you delete them....

Pre-installing Updates Create a new folder on your hard disk (something like C:\sp2\winxp will do nicely). Use Windows Explorer to copy the entire contents of your Windows CD into that folder. To make sure that hidden files and system files are also copied, make sure that you've set Folder Options in Explorer to "Show hidden files and folders" and have unchecked the box next to "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" as described earlier in this article. Create a second folder named C:\sp2\sp2 for the update files as well. If you've got the SP2 CD, copy the file named "xpsp2.exe" into that folder instead....

If you browse a folder and close the "Folders" toolbar, the tree-view of the drives and folders on the computer is replaced with some handy shortcuts.
