Yet ANOTHER DVD Format Back in the early part of the decade, there was a startup called Constellation 3D working on a fluorescent disc that could potentially hold one teraByte of data. Much of the DMD technology is based on the Fluorescent Multilayer Disc (FMD) from Constellation 3D. The reason is that while the DMD uses pits like regular DVDs, the pits are coated with a transparent fluorescent material. Once encoded and coated with the fluorescent composition, the individual layers are then bonded together to yield a single optical disc with multiple layers....

New 10 teraByte CD-ROM
- News
A US company, Constellation 3D, revealed a similar technology, last year, called Fluorescent Multi-layer Discs, and is expected to demonstrate their own products in the next few months. The technology uses "controlled extinction of fluorescence" to record data. A bit is written by exposing photosensitive glass to radiation, altering its fluorescence....

LEDs could fulfill everyday lighting functions by 2010, says iSuppli report
- News
According to a new report from market research firm iSuppli, as advances in technology enable LED light capacity to increase, and as manufacturing costs become competitive with incandescent and fluorescent lighting, LEDs could provide a new and cost-effective alternative for everyday spot lighting.. According to a new report from market research firm iSuppli, as advances in technology enable LED light capacity to increase, and as manufacturing costs become competitive with incandescent and fluorescent lighting, LEDs could provide a new and cost-effective alternative for everyday spot lighting. Currently, white LEDs produce 60 lumens/watt, but you would need 80 to 100 lm/W to become cost competitive with the 65 lm/W of fluorescent tubes and 17 lm/W of incandescents, according to US Department of Energy figures....

HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera And Waterproof Case
- Articles & reviews
White balance settings include sun, shade, tungsten, fluorescent and manual (but there appears to be no white balance correction capability). Though you may be tempted to consider buying this snazzy case for those who own other digital cameras, be warned that only Photosmart offerings are warranted to work inside its clear plastic and fluorescent yellow interior (it wouldn't accommodate a Canon A80, for example)....

Silicon Nanocrystals Shine For All to See
- News
The band gap of the nanocrystals varies with the size of the nanoparticle, so the fluorescent wavelength can be tuned by the size of the nanocrystals. Well, some folks say that the glowing nanoclusters could lead to new materials for displays, optical memory, micro-opto-electronic applications, or even fluorescent tags for biological systems....
