First-tier motherboard makers Asustek Computer, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) collectively shipped about 7.9 million motherboards in June, up 27.8 percent from 6.18 million units during the same period of last year.

While the first generation of HD DVD players will output 1080i resolution - interlaced, not progressive - smarter, top-of-the-line HDTV displays produced from now on should be able to compensate for that, says AACS spokesperson Richard Doherty, a Microsoft employee.
