Intel drops "Pentium" brand

Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group, told TG Daily that Intel has informed OEM's some time ago that the Pentium brand will be going away. While companies that command the chain from building and selling a system, such as Dell, may benefit from Intel's decision, traditional system builders are left behind, Enderle believes: "The more choices you have, the more problems arise at the retail level," he explained. Enderle goes as far as saying that AMD may benefit from the outgoing Pentium brand and attract even more system builder attention. Their approach typically is "it's ok if you disagree, but we are going through with this anyway," according to Enderle....

OEM’s have been complaining for years about Intel’s behavior," Enderle said, "but current executives are likely not to be very happy to take the stand and put their career on the line." Enderle and Krewell mentioned that AMD indeed may have a case, since it has done well in developing a strong product line and "did not miss on executing" its strategy. In fact, AMD singled out Intel as the only reason and in the end "did not have a choice other than filing this suit, since they are locked out of large parts of the market," Enderle said....

According to Enderle, at least Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's Platform Products & Services Division, believes that current mass market memory is a "serious problem". However, according to Enderle, memory manufacturers do not take Microsoft's shift towards ECC serious enough at this time to take the necessary steps for a production increase.
