Schaumburg (IL) - Motorola announced the first prototype of a nano emissive display that is based on carbon nanotubes - a technology that is believed to lead the way to larger flat panel displays that are not only cheaper than today’s devices but also offer a higher image quality. CNT is based on the idea to accelerate electrons to create a large television display based on field emission technology....

BMW hydrogen car has 'near-zero emissions'
- News
BMW hydrogen car has 'near-zero emissions'. The BMW Hydrogen 7 Mono-Fuel test vehicle has been rated by the US Department of Energy as a super-ultra low-emission vehicle (SULEV), the highest designation for low emission standards.. The man in charge of hydrogen vehicle testing, Thomas Wallner, said the emissions from the Hydrogen 7 vehicle were "only a fraction" of the level required for the SULEV level. He also noted that the car’s 12-cylinder engine sometimes had emission levels that were cleaner than "ambient air" that entered the engine. The testing center said the car had "near-zero emissions," and it required special technology just to be able to measure it....

WWF Slaps U.S. Government Over Lack Of Energy Efficiency Progress
- News
The WWF described the U.S. as being the "largest emitter with the highest per capita emissions and an increasing trend in total emissions." Slightly better than the U.S. was Canada with "very high per capita emissions, a steadily increasing trend in total emissions (recently revised upwards), far away from its Kyoto target and inadequate mid to long-term greenhouse gas targets." However, the WWF said that Russia’s emissions have increased steadily since 1999 "and there is hardly any policy in place to curb emissions." According to the WWF "Germany’s emissions declined 1990 to 2000 partly due to economic downturn in Eastern Germany but also due to national measures. The UK (#1) has made the most progress, the WWF said, with emission’s already below the Kyoto target -"largely due to a transition from coal to gas in the 1990s." the organization noted that the fall in emissions has "levelled off since 2000 and the share of coal has again increased and emissions are expected to rise further."...

Bill Gates Uses 10,000 Times The Energy Of The Average American, MIT Says
- News
The MIT class said that it compared the carbon emissions of Americans in a variety of lifestyles ranging from the homeless to multimillionaires, from Buddhist monks to soccer moms and compared them to those of other nations. This "floor" below which nobody in the U.S. can drop, no matter what their energy choices are, turned out to be 8.5 tons of annual carbon dioxide emissions, the class found. The average annual carbon dioxide emission per person was found to be 20 metric tons, compared to a world average of four tons. What appears to have a substantial impact on greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. is the economical effect of saved energy and its "rebound effect". Absent such national actions, he says, it is important to study "what role consumer choices can play" in lowering the nation’s carbon emissions....

Map exposes carbon dioxide hotspots in the U.S.
- News
In a more general view, Purdue found that “previous maps of U.S. fossil fuel emissions were inadequate for current scientific and policy-making needs.” While usually the Northeast and old industry is blamed to be the worst greenhouse gas producer in the U.S., the Southwest has extremely high concentrations as well, according to the map. Purdue University claims that the new map shows CO2 emissions at more than 100 times more detail than was available before. Until now, data on carbon dioxide emissions were reported, in the best cases, monthly at the level of an entire state. The animated Vulcan model examines CO2 emissions at local levels on an hourly basis. It is the next generation in our understanding of fossil fuel emissions....

Dell Claims Carbon Neutrality
- News
The program was designed to help eliminate or offset 475,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Dell’s focus was on three categories : Direct emissions from actual energy production and use of fuel ; indirect emissions from facilities energy use ; and employee air travel. Carbon emissions from its building energy use was 80% of Dell’s calculated impacts. This is where the company concentrated its major energy efficiency efforts, which allowed them to reduce their emissions by 20,000 tons (4% and worth about $3 million in reduced energy use) of their carbon dioxide footprint annually....

Scientists use solar energy to create liquid fuel from greenhouse gas

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions dominate today's environmental discussions: A single large SUV's are estimated to blow out more than 100 tons of the gas over their life time and contribute to significantly to global warming. While especially car manufacturers look for ways to reduce CO2 emissions in future vehicles, scientists went the other way and claim they have found a way to actually use CO2 as a renewable energy source.
