Wireless Electricity Becomes a Reality
- News
Wireless Electricity Becomes a Reality. wireless electricity becomes a reality. During a mid-day press conference in chilly New York City, MobileWise showed off a handful of functioning prototype powerbases and retrofitted mobile devices that all use the company's new MobileWise chipset and enable "Wire-Free" electric power....

New solar cells produce electricity in any weather condition
- News
New solar cells produce electricity in any weather condition. new solar cells produce electricity in any weather condition. The plastic solar cells are the first to be able to harness the sun’s invisible infrared rays, permitting applications of the material to produce electricity in any condition, sunny or overcast....

Micro-organisms produce natural wires to conduct electricity
- News
Micro-organisms produce natural wires to conduct electricity. micro. Scientists studying how a class of micro-organism called Geobacter sulfurreducens generates electricity to help remove radioactive material such as uranium from ground water, have discovered they actually build conductive 3 - 5 nm "nanowires" whose length can be measured in microns. Amherst (MA) - Scientists studying how a class of micro-organism called Geobacter sulfurreducens generates electricity to help remove radioactive material such as uranium from ground water, have discovered they actually build conductive 3 - 5 nm "nanowires" whose length can be measured in microns. But some Fe(iii) reducers, the report states, lack the particular class of cytochrome necessary to conduct electricity. The practical implications of this discovery extend to the realm of environmental cleanup and restoration - for instance, in eliminating contaminants caused by oil spills or pollution settlement - as well as the possible future development of microbial fuel cells that produce electricity from organic waste....

Nation's energy grid could power almost 185 million electric cars
- News
Nation's energy grid could power almost 185 million electric cars. doe hybrid 185million. First, the cars have to be plug-in hybrid electrics which are not commonly available today. Modern hybrids like the Toyota Prius charge and store electricity on the fly while driving and do not plug into the wall. In many areas, especially in the Pacific West, daytime electrical supplies are quite low. Indeed, it was just a few years ago that California experienced rolling blackouts from an electricity shortage....

Nano-cables convert light into electricity
- News
Nano-cables convert light into electricity. nano cables light electricity. Nanocables that convert light into electricity could one day be used to power nano-robots.. Nanocables that convert light into electricity could one day be used to power nano-robots. They resemble the light-harvesting antennae used by some bacteria and transform light into electricity in a similar way to the semiconductors in solar panels, albeit on a much smaller scale....

Anaheim (CA) - Police departments frequently catch criminals with cars, motorcycles and yes even Segways, but some departments, like the Los Angeles Police Department, are now trying out an electric trike made by Irvine Calfornia-based T3 Motion, with spectacular results. The trike uses just pennies of electricity a day and, according to the company, is very cheap to maintain. Mike Carra, a former Beverly Hills police officer and now a T3 Motion rep, told TG Daily that the vehicle uses just 10 cents of electricity per day and the batteries can be charged in three hours....

Nanogenerator produces electricity from ultrasonic waves
- News
Nanogenerator produces electricity from ultrasonic waves. nanogenerator ultrasonic wave electricity. Scientists at the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology have demonstrated a nano-scale generating that could provide electricity to microscopic machines by harvesting different types of energy from their environment.. Atlanta (GA) - Scientists at the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology have demonstrated a nano-scale generating that could provide electricity to microscopic machines by harvesting different types of energy from their environment. According to Zhong Lin Wang, professor at Georgia Tech, the generator can convert mechanical energy from environmental sources such as ultrasonic waves, mechanical vibration or blood flow into continuous direct-current electricity. That does not sound much, but the electricity generated would be enough to power bio-sensors, environmental monitors and even nanoscale robots, Wang said....

Scientists convert processor heat back to electricity
- News
Scientists convert processor heat back to electricity. scientists convert proc heat. The sound is then converted into electricity by using "piezoelectric" devices that are squeezed in response to pressure, including sound waves, and change that pressure into electrical current. Only about 20% of the sound energy is lost when pressure is converted to electricity, Symko said. So, how efficient is the conversion of waste heat into electricity overall Within two years, the physicist believes that the devices could be used as an alternative to solar cells for converting sunlight into electricity and as a new way to generate electricity from heat that now is released from nuclear power plant cooling towers....

Server electricity use to grow faster in Asia-Pacific and Western Europe than in the U.S.
- News
Server electricity use to grow faster in Asia-Pacific and Western Europe than in the U.S.. Server electricity growth. If power-per-server remains constant, those trends would imply an increase in electricity used by servers worldwide of about 40% by 2010, according to Koomey. If the average power use per unit goes up at the same rate as it did from 2000 to 2005, total electricity used by servers by 2010 would be 76% higher than it was in 2005. The projected growth in the absolute electricity consumption for servers in the Asia Pacific Region translates in more than twice the electricity consumption in 2010 than in 2005 in Asia-Pacific, requiring the additional capacity of two 1000 MW power plants. From the perspective of the U.S., at least the annual growth in additional required electricity has been below the world’s average between 2000 and 2005 and Koomey believes this trend will continue....
