We put the demos to the test on a high-powered Dell XPS system, to find out if DX10 truly makes a difference.. A while back, we took an extensive look at demos of the highly anticipated PC game Crysis, and compared video of the Windows XP version running DirectX9 to the new Windows Vista version running DX10 (see the THG video on Crysis). Now the bad news: is DX10 all that it's cracked up to be? The short answer is "yes," but the improvements are small, and it will take a keen eye and a real appreciation for graphics detail to tell the difference between the DX9 and DX10 versions. In addition, we had the system's SLI disabled to start off with We did this for a couple reasons; first, the Dell's Nvidia control panel had SLI disabled at its default setting, and second, enabling SLI was completely useless without downloading Nvidia's recent SLI driver for DX10....

And while there was a noticeable upgrade in some key graphics areas, there wasn't a huge difference between the console and PC versions of the game (more on the differences between the DX9 and DX10 versions later in this series). Therefore, it's likely the game isn't even coming close to using DX10 at its full potential. It will be some time before a game arrives that was designed in native DX10 and built to realize the full advantage of the new technology. Still, there are games built specifically for the PC - rather than console ports - that are utilizing DX10 on Vista....
