    The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has announced its third annual robot race, the DARPA Urban Challenge - or as some are calling it, "Grand Challenge 3." This time, it's not the desert the bot makers will be taking on, but the heart of the city.

    Real-time translation of television, phone or web sites could come in a few years if the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has its way. Its funding the Global Autonomous Language Exploitation (GALE) project that will aim for 90 to 95 percent accurate translations of Arabic or Mandarin by 2010. Competitors are large companies like IBM, SRI and BBN who must make the grade every year or risk being cut from the project.

  • DARPA Urban Challenge to have multiple cash prizes

    The head of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Dr. Tony Tether, says the Urban Challenge will have multiple cash prizes. Tether told Wired magazine that prizes from $500,000 to $2,000,000 will be given to the top teams that successfully complete the 60-mile urban course with robotic vehicles.
