According to The Register, the 4C group (Intel, IBM, Matsushita Electric and Toshiba) has backed down on its Content Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) scheme that would have forced copyright protection software onto consumer drives. New proposals by Andre Hedrick, the Linux IDE guru and maintainer of the Linux ATA subsystem, would give users control of the CPRM on their machines. His amendment adds two new commands, which "SHALL be included in all devices that support/enable the CPRM 'e00148rX', which is now defined as OPTIONAL. Regardless if the CPRM key locks are supported, CPRM Enable:Disable SHALL be supported"....

Interestingly enough, it appears that the National Committee on Information Technology Standards (NCITS) struck down the proposal for Copy Protection in Recordable Media (CPRM) for the ATA standard yesterday. Judging by some of the mail I received in the last two weeks not many of you will be shedding a tear for the organization behind CPRM, 4C Entity LLC. Anyhow, CPRM was only one battle that was won, or lost, depending on your view of the matter, but the war is far from over....
