NVIDIA has also got good news for the card manufacturers that are suffering under supply problems of the successful NVIDIA chips. So far only SGS Thompson produced NVIDIA graphic chips, hardly able to cover the demand, from now on TSMC will also produce silicon for NVIDIA , who expect to become even more successful than they are currently. The specs of TNT blew away everybody when NVIDIA announced it, 250 MPixels/s, 8 million triangles/s are amazing numbers. NVIDIA admits that the shrink to 0.25 micron will not be before the end of this year and that 125 MHz will not be possible with 0.35 micron. TNT has the chance to be a better and more cost effective product than Voodoo2, so the question is only if NVIDIA can indeed deliver this high performance of TNT, if it will be at an affordable price and particularly when this will be....

Nvidia's upcoming RIVA TNT2 looked like a merely overhauled version of the well known RIVA TNT and although it was clear that TNT2 would be faster than TNT, still only few expected that TNT2 would be a particularly interesting product. I heard about TNT2-Ultra some six weeks ago and for the first time I saw NVIDIA's chance to kick 3Dfx from its 3D-performance throne. NVIDIA explained to me back in January that TNT2 wouldn't even need to be clocked as high as Voodoo3 to beat the performance of 3Dfx's latest chip, they promised me that TNT2 would be faster than Voodoo3 clock for clock. Still NVIDIA took time until this 'super-chip' was eventually presented to the public. It's only a month ago that 'GeForce256' was finally unveiled to us, and NVIDIA didn't lose any time to make it available to everyone soon after the announcement, although the schedule got delayed by the Taiwanese earthquake. The Features The most important thing about GeForce is that NVIDIA doesn't want it to be called '3D-chip' anymore. NVIDIA claims that GeForce can transform, clip and light 15-25 million triangles/s, and somewhere else I read it's at least 10 million triangles/s. NVIDIA once claimed 500 Mpixels/s, now it's obviously shrunk to 480 Mpixels/s, but who cares, it's still way beyond the 366 Mpixels/s of the fastest current 3D-chips....

3dfx Has Been Caught By Nvidia. second hand smoke. Having come out of the gate fast and furious, 3dfx has been caught up quite rapidly by Nvidia, and perhaps, even S3. Maybe Matrox's G400 will do its bit to damage 3dfx's market position over the course of the year. It has a lot of work to do to overtake ATI, S3, Matrox, and Nvidia in the overall volume stakes.
